“But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD”. This is a verse and statement by Joshua that most Christians know. Some have it has a notecard on their mirror or fridge. Others have this line on a plaque over their door or even as a painting in their living room. But most Christians take this statement out of context and water it down. Let me say that again, most Christians love this line but have no true sense what it means or is saying.
Here is what I find many Christians think this line means. “My house is serving God so we go to church, we read our Bible, we pray, and we call ourselves Christians because we are serving God.” Yet, they have multiple idols of the heart, mind, soul, and life. They do those things because it makes them feel good or it is what they were raised to do or it is how a Christian is supposed to act or what they are supposed to say. Yet, this “religion” has even become an idol. The people that do not understand this line worship things more than God, things like…their jobs, their stomach, there bank account, their children, their ego, their house, achievements, romance, family, sex, and you can keep adding to the list.
Here is what the line by Joshua actually means. “I will worship God alone and live for Him alone and sacrifice all for Him only and make sure that everyone I know knows that the reason I live is for Jesus only”. That is what Joshua was saying. It is a statement that I am going to kill every idol in my life and destroy the paper kings of my soul and let the only true KING of the universe sit on the throne He alone deserves.
So when you say, “me and my household serve the Lord” you better be saying that you are going to blow up every single idol, let Jesus expose every sin of your life, and live for Him only, no matter what the cost.
