So far reading through Ezekiel, the prophet has brought many pictures and symbols into the message of God. God has told Ezekiel to pack his bags, dig a hole in a wall, shave his head, and preach in certain directions and at certain objects. God has also told His message through Ezekiel with many parables, using pictures of watchmen, prostitutes, and vines. God knows that not only is it important for God’s people to hear His words but also use their other senses to get a handle on what He is saying. This is part of the reason that each Sunday during my teaching time I use picture slides for the points of the text to not only help illustrate the point but also connect with the other senses while the ears hear the word. God using our other senses to get His message across is not just a tool from Ezekiel. Jesus taught in parables and used objects that people could see, touch, smell, and taste while He was speaking. Paul, Peter, John, Jonah, Hosea, David, Moses, and others all used this same tool of combining senses to teach the truth of God’s Word and cement it into the listeners head. Using multiple senses also give the listen no excuse and puts the blame for not understanding or hearing onto the listener and his/her heart attitude. Here are 2 other of my favorite picture word truths from Scripture.
Redemption- This word gives us the picture of slavery, where Jesus buys us back or redeems us. Sin has put every person in bondage and the will of every person before Jesus is to do sin. But the picture with redemption is Jesus by dying on the cross and paying the penalty for sin, buys us, His children, back from the bondage to sin and sets us free with hearts bent toward Him.
Justification-This word gives the picture of a court room. This word shows and tells of the instantaneous legal act of God where He thinks of our sin as forgiven and Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us, which leads to His declaration that His children are righteous in His sight.
